Autrêches / In the footsteps of the 35th Infantry Regiment

Eglise d'Autrêches

"Red Line" distance: 3 km

Less than four weeks following the declaration of war, soldiers from the 1st German Army crossed through Autrêches, on 31 August 1914. Following the Battle of the Marne, the French attempted to retake the village. On 14 September, infantrymen from the 35th and 42nd Infantry Regiments managed to do so, but only temporarily. The very next day, very violent fighting broke out and lasted over ten days, spreading to the rest of the sector. At the end of September 1914, with the stabilization of the frontline, the Germans retained the heart of the village, while the French occupied the southernmost hamlet of the commune (district). Over the next 29 plus months, the enemies would thus face each other. Very frequent shellings on either side of the frontline would destroy most of the district's dwellings.

By the end of this disastrous war, over 95% of the village would be destroyed.
